What is Liquid Drum & Bass?

Liquid drum and bass, often shortened to “Liquid D&B” or just “Liquid”, is a subgenre of Drum & Bass that emerged in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It’s characterised by a more melodic, atmospheric, and emotionally resonant sound compared to the harder, more aggressive styles of drum and bass.

Some key attributes of the liquid drum and bass sound include:

Warm, Deep Basslines – The basslines tend to be very deep and sublow, but smooth and embracing rather than abrasive.

Floating Atmospheres – Liquid utilises pads, atmospheres, and ambient textures to create a spacious, immersive backdrop.

Soulful Elements – Influences from Jazz, Soul, and more downtempo genres give lLiquid a soulful, organic quality with emotive chord progressions.

Vocals – Both vocal samples and full vocal performances are commonly used often with a melancholic or romantic quality.

The liquid sound developed as an alternative to the harder-edged Jump-Up and Techstep styles, providing a chilled yet groovy vibe more suitable for home listening. Pioneering artists like Calibre, Makoto, Nujabes, and LTJ Bukem helped shape and popularise the sound in the late 90s/early 2000s.
